A domain sales email that worked!

by Mike Sullivan

A few months ago, I posted about my experience selling domains containing the names of local towns resulting in quick sales.  Since that time I have received quite a few emails from readers asking for the email text I use in those types of sales.  The beauty of it is, the email that has worked for me has been short and simple.

“Hello,

I’m an Algonquin resident. I also own the domain AlgonquinChiropractor.com. Algonquin Chiropractor is a top search term used when people are searching for a chiropractor in Algonquin. I’m looking to sell the domain name. Not at an outrageous amount, but for just $200. Let me know if you are interested. I will be contacting other Chiropractors in the area as well.

Thank You

Mike Sullivan

That’s it!  Nothing magical.  Just real. Not desperate, not pushy, not intrusive.  I picked up the “I will be contacting other <type of business> in the area as well…” from a post Elliot wrote back in the day.  I couldn’t find the original post, but I thought the hook was so good that it stuck with me.

Do you have any sample emails that have worked well for you?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for posting the email template, I’ll surely give it is try.

Meanwhile, can you please tell how you generate the list of prospective local business that may be interested in your domain. I mean do you pick advertisers bidding on that geo-specific keyword (like advertisers on Google SERP) or you also send mails to businesses who are already ranking for that particular keyword?

I do both. Why limit yourself? I first look to see how many businesses show in the Google local listing to decide if it’s worth the effort.

Meanwhile, sometimes the prospect reply the mail asking for traffic to the domain. So, what should be the reasonable reply? I mean since it’s hand-regged domain, so there won’t be any traffic. Therefore, how to respond in that situation.

Actually, I am new to domaining, so try to learn few things from experts.

Hi Mike,

Can you please throw some light with answer to my previous question.

Here you are not focusing on traffic. You are focusing on the quality of the name for the given business. It hasn’t happened to me, but I would reply letting them know that there is no site at the domain, hence, no traffic. The real value will be when they develop the name or point to their site.
