Mashable Lists 10 Websites to Watch

by Mike Sullivan

On Monday, Mashable listed 10 Websites to Watch in 2011.  The headline caught my eye not because I was interested in the prediction of which sites would be hot, but because I wondered what type of domains these sites were using.  Generic key word domains are my favorite, there is no denying that.  So I was hoping to see more of them in the list.  Check out the Mashable article if you are interested in the actual sites.

Mashable’s 10 Websites to Watch in 2011

  1. Kickstarter.com – Technically a generic name used in a branding sense.  Great concept behind the site as well.
  2. OpenLeaks.org – To be honest, I’m all leaked out.  I like to see a dot org in the list.
  3. Klout.com – I suppose the “K” works, but Clout.com would be way better.   See how much Klout I carry.
  4. Hipmonk.com – That sounds like a travel site, right?
  5. GiltGroupe.com – Resolves to Gilt.com, a better name in my opinion.
  6. JoinDiaspora.com – Maybe after everyone joins, they’ll buy Diaspora.com
  7. Quora.com – I think this is a real word… not one I use.
  8. GrooveShark.com – Dancing sharks… I actually tried this site out and it was pretty cool.  Plays music on the fly.
  9. Drupal.org – I haven’t tried Drupal.  WordPress is my thing.
  10. FourSquare.com – I’m alright with the name.  I haven’t tried FourSquare and I’m just not into the concept.  I also said the same about Twitter at one point.

What do you think?  Post your opinion.

You don’t know what you are missing on Quora, Mike.
Yes, it’s real world indeed…but the discussions and people there are top notch.

Quite a list of sites……Just boggles the mind what all is available out there.

Some of the choice of names are a little different. Of course they would all be brillant if I held them at one time.

Just goes to show you can start a business with any domain – most of those are brandables and several are typos waiting to happen so it is good to see the Guilt resolve.
As you preach, what real sites need is content and traffic and a concept/Brand so these are good internet applications and thus domains. Not my first choices either, but whatever works.
Maybe you can sell/broker them some of the generics they really should buy to shore up their traffic? Though some of them are hard to categorize with just one or two generics…
Great post though and I’ll take a look at some of them I haven’t seen including GrooveShark.
