Domain Kiting

Domain kiting was domain tasting taken to its logical end. Instead of deleting a name after four days and moving on, you deleted it and registered it again immediately, over and over, so the domain stayed in your control indefinitely and the registration fee was refunded every time. Like kiting a check, except the bank never noticed.

The term was coined by Bob Parsons at GoDaddy in 2006, and the practice died with tasting when ICANN put limits on free deletes in 2009.

It's worth knowing because it explains a lot of the industry's plumbing. The five-day grace period is still there. The reason nobody abuses it anymore is the fee that now applies to excess deletes.
