.BIZ

.biz launched in 2001 as one of the first new generic extensions, intended as an overflow for businesses that couldn't get the .com they wanted. It got a burst of defensive registrations from companies protecting their brands and then settled into a long, quiet middle age.

The problem was never technical. It's that .biz always read as "couldn't get the .com," and a fair share of what got registered on it was spam and affiliate sites, which didn't help. Twenty-plus years later that reputation is baked in.

There's an aftermarket, and short generic .biz names do sell occasionally, but the prices are low and the buyers are few. If you're choosing between a .biz and a slightly worse .com, take the .com.
