Registrant Verification
Since the 2013 Registrar Accreditation Agreement, a registrar has to verify the email address on a new registration and on any change to the registrant's name or email. You get a message with a link. Click it within fifteen days and nothing happens. Ignore it and the domain goes on clientHold until you do.
The rule catches more people than it should. The verification email lands in spam, the registrant had a typo in their address, or they bought fifty names and only clicked the first link. Then their site goes dark and they have no idea why.
If you buy and sell domains, verify every account email once and keep it current. If you're pushing a domain to a buyer, warn them the email is coming.
