Wayback Machine

The Wayback Machine has been taking snapshots of the web since 1996, and for anyone buying an expired or aged domain it's the first stop. Type in the domain and you can see what the site looked like at various points over the years.

What you're looking for is the story. A domain that spent fifteen years as a legitimate business has backlinks and reputation you're inheriting. A domain that spent its last two years as a Chinese pharmacy, a casino affiliate or a hacked WordPress install has a spam footprint you're inheriting instead, and Google remembers.

Before I bid on an expired domain, I want to know what used to live there. Five minutes on archive.org has talked me out of more purchases than any appraisal tool ever has.
