Dot CO Positioned Ahead of Dot Net

by Mike Sullivan

Is dot CO really that great of a name?  Is it the next best thing to .COM?  Would you rather have .CO instead of the .NET equivalent?  The folks over at Network Solutions have positioned the .CO tld ahead of .NET in their domain search results.  I’m not sure if this is a permanent move or just one to test the promotional waters of the new tld.

Dot CO may have some potential.  If it was released as a gTLD and not a ccTLD it would be easier to support.  I’m just not ready to see it trumping dot NET at this point.  A year from now I may look back on this post and wish I had seen it differently.  At the moment, I still see it as COlumbia and not COmpany.

There is a lot of SERIOUS money behind .co. This is a factor people are overlooking. No one can predict the future, but when you have such support, a lot can be done. IMO, there is no substitute for .com, but for new extensions, this is one to look out for. Great alternative to the pop culture of .com. I don’t see it trumping .net, but it will be up there with .de.

GoDaddy did the same a while ago, putting .co right after .com in the TLD dropdown menu.

Or how about…

I think the majority of people (not the domaining crowd) will eventually see .co as “company”.

I think .com still the king. And the future of .co still not predictable, it is brand new and still clouded with all marketing effort. Let’s wait and see…..

Shaun,

Past results don’t guarantee future results ie .me vs .co.
We’ll see.

I guess we’ll all see when all the .co’s start expiring. I expect it will be another also ran.
