Transfer is a term you’ll encounter frequently. It refers to the process of changing the registrant or registrar of a specific domain name.
There are two main types of transfers in the domain name world:
- Registrant Transfer: This involves changing the ownership of the domain name from one party to another. As an investor, you’d be involved in a registrant transfer when you buy or sell a domain.
- Registrar Transfer: This is the process of moving a domain name from one domain registrar (the company that manages the reservation of internet domain names) to another. Reasons for a registrar transfer could include seeking better customer service, lower prices, or additional services.
Both types of transfers must follow specific procedures set out by ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), including authorization codes and confirmation emails, to ensure the legitimacy and security of the transfer process.
